Your Friends List

Notice anything different with your "Manage Friends" page?  Go check out yours now!  One of the best things is that you don't have to scroll back up to the top of the page to remember which check box is which, finally!  And also check out  I'm in ur friends list fixing ur bugs by 20after4 and :+fav: it too, if you would, please.

Taken from zilla774's journal:
Make sure to check out your Manage Friends page. It's been given an overhaul and now works without crashing your browser (if like me, you have more than a 100 or so friends). Try it, it's awesome and then go hug 20after4 for breathing life into it.

50 Thumbs Limit on News Articles

No one in the Artisan Crafts gallery has ever been guilty of submitting feature news articles that are a mass of thumbs, not that I can recall anyway.  I'm probably the lone guilty one regarding that, although mine always  have a text introduction and are always, always segmented into subject, sub-galleries, or artisan medium, but everyone will have to adhere to the new rule regarding thumbs in news articles that was put in place by fourteenthstar.  For myself, this will probably mean the end of my article features, such as my themed articles and my Manga/Anime series.

Taken from FaMz's journal:
There is a 50 thumb limit restriction on thumbnails within news articles. If your news article exceeds this amount, it will be reported to the Help Desk. Why? cus having too many thumbnails defeats the purpose of 'feature' when you get past 60 or, so viewers lose interest and works don't get individual attention, and for people with lower band width, it can take ages to load.

There's no Reason for dArama with the New Share Icons

You might have objections to the Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and Digg icons that are a new feature on your deviations and news articles now, but remember, they are not promoting copyright infringement (art theft), they are, in fact,  promoting your work</b>.  This is not a feature that helps art thieves to upload your art anywhere; it is a feature to help people link to your artwork.  This is merely a fast shortcut for convenience and most sites like dA have it already... all it does is saves people from having to open a new browser window.  Linking to your artwork is now easier and more controlled with a small thumbnail of approximately 150x150 pixels of the work acting as a preview to the direct link of your work. If people are interested, they can click on it and gain access to the direct image. You, the artist, get all the credit.

Taken from Jules1983's journal because she's explained it so well that if you had any fears or doubts, she'll put them to rest:
You might have noticed that on your deviations you now have little icons (Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and Digg). Do NOT worry. These links do not encourage people to steal your art and post them all over the net. All they do is create a link to your art. Say someone wanted to share a photograph of yours on Reddit, they would click on the little reddit button, receive a link to your artwork, post that link on Reddit, and whoever saw that link on Reddit and clicked on it, would automatically be redirected to YOUR deviation page.  That's a GOOD thing. Since they are now on YOUR page, they instantly know you are the author/owner of the artwork. Now say the person that clicked the link was a magazine editor or something and they love your picture/gallery. They could INSTANTLY contact you.  Compare this to someone stealing one of your pics, uploading it to another website, an editor seeing it would have no idea that it's your artwork.

You can also read TheRyanFord's opinions in his  Art Theft & Sharing.

And of course, the final word on this from fourteenthstar:
No doubt you'll all have noticed the new link share features within deviations now. It's nothing new to the web in general, but it's new within dA, and something which I believe has been lacking for a long time. Now you can upload a deviation and instantly share your work with others on Facebook, Digg, Twitter & Reddit, all with ease. There's even built in URL shortening, for additional swank. Nifty, innit.

Apparently though, this is a bad thing -- and some of you would prefer we disabled this, so we'll be looking at providing an opt-out for those of you who do. Whilst respecting this -- I don't particularly understand it. I mean, whenever you see something that you like/find funny/want to discuss with others online, you copy/paste a URL and link it to them, right?? Why would you not want people to share your artwork with others? Key word - share. You are simply passing on another link. I'm looking forward to increased sales on my prints thanks to the awesomeness provided. You guys should embrace it too and stop getting sucked into OMG PEOPLE ARE STEALING MY WORK mentality.

And because spyed himself SAID SO in hq's blog:
As of a few days ago, deviantART released a series of Share tools found in the description area of any deviation. These tools were built to support those with Twitter, Facebook, Reddit or Digg accounts so that they can more easily share links to your work. To reiterate, these are links to your work!

This isn't art theft. It isn't copyright infringment. It's certainly nothing you could control even if you had even the most advanced tools imaginable. This is the foundation of the Internet itself; the ability to hyper-link to other destinations. The links return your deviation page, which credits you. So your level of concern should be zero.

Facebook has a thumbnailing technology which will display a very small thumb of your artwork (smaller than the thumbs found here) -- this is common on the web, and there's nothing you can do about it (or we for that matter) as these thumbnails would be generated if a person simply cut and pasted a link to your deviation on Facebook regardless of our support. Thumbnails used by Facebook, and Google and others to direct traffic to your art work are common and many courts have found them to be legal uses of your work.

The idea that deviantART would take direct action to help others steal your work, or encourage this sort of behavior is not acceptable to us. It is offensive to us. It is a contradiction of our core mission; many of us are artists ourselves, and we have zero interest in siding with copyright infringers.

dArama at its best, ya tin foil hat wearing so and so's!
