It's My Birthday

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 23, 2008, 1:26 AM

So, today's my birthday and no, I'm not telling you how old I am. What I wanted to do today was have a journal feature, a news article feature, a new deviation of my own, and a change in journal CSS. The news article will feature deviaciously delicious artwork from all the Artisan Crafts galleries with Final Fantasy VII and especially Advent Children as its theme. But for my journal today I wanted to feature art from all across dA with a little photography, traditional art, vector art, and fractal art, in addition to mostly Artisan Crafts.

These are my favorites, although only a few are in my faves folder. Many I had suggested for a DD, later on I featured others. Why do I like these so much? No particular reason, not any I can pin down anyway, but these are the ones that always make me stop and linger, no matter how many times I've already seen them.

I have this thing for trains and big trucks. They're big, they're powerful, and things of beauty when in motion. When I'm walking the streets in the middle of the night in all its quietness and hear the whistle of a train approaching town, I get a thrill. When it departs and I hear its whistle trailing off in the distance, my heart just sinks. I've never known why though. But in the middle of the night when there isn't the noise of the day surrounding me, I can hear a lone semi-truck tooling along on the freeway far in the distance and I get the same thrill. I think it might be that I'm experiencing someone else's life coming near me, but not quite touching my own life. It's like seeing a shooting star ... I see it and others see it, but I'll never know who else saw it. But it has an impact on someone, somewhere. And those things are beautiful, even if it's just an ordinary semi-truck. The deviations below strike me in the same way. Not in a way I can pinpoint, but in a way that touches and resonates with some hidden corner of myself.

Artisan Crafts FAQ

Tangible craft work created by the artist for utilitary use, such as leather working, woodworking, glass-blowing, metalwork, textiles, etc.

• Architectural Design
Either architectural models or things pertaining to architecture made by you, such as handmade awnings, patios, decks, and buildings & shelter. No drawn or rendered work is allowed.

• Culinary Arts -
Edible art; food and drink made by you and that is purely edible or is enhanced with non-edible objects.

• Custom Dolls
Custom Dolls - Hard-bodied and soft-bodied original dolls, customized purchased dolls and BJDs, customized MLPs, customized purchased figures (action figures, munnys, dunnys, etc.). Dolls made from either premade bases or completely custom dolls of porcelain, plastic, vinyl, etc. Plushies belong in Artisan Crafts > Textile > Plushies.

• Folding & Papercraft
The art of folding and cutting paper to create objects of a 3D nature such as origami, dioramas, and other art work.

• Jewelry
Jewelry that is handmade by you regardless of medium, and includes rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, charms, keychains, body piercings jewelry, etc.

• Knotting & Weavings
Anything woven, whether by hand or on a loom; baskets and other woven reed creations; dreamcatchers; other woven art. Knitted and crocheted crafts belong in the Textiles Gallery under an appropriate sub-category.

• Leatherwork
Leatherworking including stamped flat pieces like belts to meticulously shaped and stitched objects such as sandals, saddles, bags, clothing, chaps, etc. Also, book covers, armor, taxidermy, etc.

• Metal Work
Metal work involving the use of heat, including all blades, such as knives, swords, cutlery, etc., armor, chain mail, blacksmithing; and any kind of metal forming without the use of heat, which would include repoussé/chasing/embossing and engraving.

• Misc/other
Miscellaneous artisan crafts that do not fit into any other sub-category, such as modified keyboards, modified guitars, feather art, duct tape art, handmade soap, masks, flower arrangements, perler bead art, and costume/cosplay props, such as weapons, etc.

• Sculpture and Glass
Works using mediums, such as clay, ceramic, synthetic sculpting compounds, papier-maché, sand, etc. This is the most confused gallery because there are also sculpture galleries in Traditional Art and in Anthro. In Artisan Crafts, it mainly has to do with more handcrafted sculpture that isn't part of what one would call "traditional." It all depends on the artist's point of view.

• Textiles
Art created by using fabric of woven or knit materials such as fashion/costume construction, plushies, quilting, and accessories such as hairpieces, like wigs and falls that you have styled, and also gloves, hats, and bows.

• Woodworking
Artisan crafts created using wood as a medium and can include carvings, turnings, constructs, pyrography, etc.
