Leather Holiday Card Project by Kitten-of-Woe Leather Holiday Card Project by Kitten-of-Woe
This is the holiday card I made and sent to dA for the Holiday Card Project 2007 [link], and yes, it is made out of leather. It is 3 5/8" by 6 1/2" and is all leather except for the stars, which are ultrasuede, because I thought the off-white creamy color was nicer than stark white leather and was also easier to attach the rhinestone to.

Why leather? Cuz give me some paper and all I'm able to do with it is draft patterns or make shopping lists on it, that's why ;). *Jagarnot had to draw out the bunnies for me, in fact, she drew all the animals I've ever done, which is not easy to do because they have to be executable in leather.

This is a holiday card but also an ornament. On the back is a cut-out window underlayed with clear vinyl and underneath I wrote a holiday greeting in ink. At the top is a brass chain (not seen here) so that it can be hung on a tree or on a nail on the wall or whatnot. This is the first card I've ever made to give to the Holiday Card Project because I joined dA only two days before Christmas last year. I think I would like to do another one next year, that is, if dA doesn't have a problem with mine being leather and not your usual and traditional card medium.

to see the card with the attached brass chain (not shown here because it's folded under the card): [link].

This is such a unique piece! It sure beats your regular old hallmark card ;) How long would it take you to make a piece like this?

On and off, it took about two months. And, that's why I make only one of these each year and why I'm already sketching out this year's card. Thankyou very much for faving it! :aww:

No problem! For the amount of work you've obviously put into it, it really deserves it. Can't wait to see what you come up with this year :D hehe good luck!

Thanks. We have wild bunnies around our place and there's just something magical about watching them cavorting in the moonlight and that was the inspiration behind this one. :aww:

Thankyou! I was a little worried at what the reaction all you guys might have at seeing one in leather. But if you all really did approve of it, then I am already thinking of this year's design -- also in leather and again some kind of animal also doing something adorable.

Leather holiday cards? Now that's a unique idea, I've never seen anything like it! It's neat that it can also be used as an ornament, that means it can be treasured for years instead of tossed out at new years.

Thanks. The rebel in me made me do it out of leather. :evillaugh: But yeh, it having more than one kind of use was also a motivation.

OMG. I want one! I have a very feisty bunny, I doubt she'd star gaze much, she's more likely to take advantage of me star gazing and make a break for forbidden part sof the house, but all the same, I like bunnies and stars, so this is pretty tough to beat :D

but it's a comet, see. And the bunnies are spellbound at the wonder of the whooshing noise over their heads  What is in those forbidden rooms that your bunny finds so attractive? :hmm:

I think it's the forbidden part. And wood. And wires. And good places to hide while nibbling. And the whole forbidden thing. We call it bunny steeplechase or bunny football. She escapes and we chase her under the dining room table, up the stairs, under the bed...

well, I totally envy you for having a pet bunny, even if she is feisty and cunning. My closest tie to bunnies is . . . my nickname is Bunny! It's true and has been for many years

I am sure they get cards in all sorts of unusual materials. You have almost sent a gift rather than a card, I hope whoever receives it is thrilled to bits!

I hope so but nevertheless, I'll be thinking of whomever gets it for some time to come. Not ever knowing who the recipient is adds mystery to the season of giving and hopes of blessings to come their way.

thanks :thanks: there's a chain on it so whoever ends up with it can hang it on the wall or something and look at it year 'round if they want. People do that with the leather ornaments so why not with a card, too?
